Board Chair | Robert Cary

Rob has served on the Horizon Utilities Corporation Board since its inception in 2005. He is an electricity markets consultant who has contributed to the development of market design and market rules for Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and has provided related consulting services in other jurisdictions. Rob is also a director of the Association of Power Producers of Ontario, as well as St. Catharines Hydro Inc. and its generation subsidiary. He is a professional engineer, chartered director and holds an MA Degree from Cambridge and an MBA from Cranfield.

Chair, HR/Governance Committee | Margaret T. Nelligan

Margaret is a partner of Aird & Berlis LLP and practices in the areas of corporate and securities law, including investments for financial institutions, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate work. She is a former member of the Securities Advisory Council of the Ontario Securities Commission and is an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. Margaret has been selected for the Women in the Lead directory, featuring women whose professional expertise and experience recommend them as candidates for corporate board appointments. She regularly advises the boards of directors of public companies on corporate governance and other matters. Margaret was recognized as a “Woman of Influence” by Women of Influence Inc., a Canadian organization dedicated to the advancement of women.

Director | Paul Benson

President and Chief Executive Officer of Benson Van Laer Inc., a financial advisory firm providing services in the areas of strategy, mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and corporate finance. Paul was a senior partner at Ernst & Young LLP. During his 26 years at E&Y, Paul’s responsibilities included Group Managing Partner and National Director of Corporate Finance responsible for all corporate finance and related services in Canada. He was also president and a shareholder in Canadian Corporate Funding Limited, a firm which invested via mezzanine debt and equity financing in growth oriented businesses and performed financial advisory work for mid-market businesses. Subsequently, financial advisory services were continued under Benson Van Laer Inc.; a limited market dealer, which was a founded Delta Capital.

Paul is the Chair of Hamilton Utilities Corporation and former Chair of the Audit and Risk Management Committee. He is a Director and member of the Audit Committee of Horizon Utilities and a shareholder and Chairman of Isotherm Technologies Inc., a manufacturer of food and beverage heating and cooling appliances for military vehicles. He has held directorships in various corporations including Oakville Hydro Corporation, Canadian Corporate Funding Limited, Brainhunter Inc., Association of Corporate Growth, and UNICEF Canada. Paul is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant with a B.Comm. (Honours) degree from Queen’s University.

Director | John Bergsma

A former Commissioner of Corporate Services for the Regional Municipality of Niagara, John has served as President of Lennox Canada Inc., President and CEO of Union Gas Limited, President of Massey Ferguson Research Ltd., and Columbus McKinnon Limited. He currently sits on the Boards of St. Catharines Hydro Inc., Pioneering Technology Corp., the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA), Niagara Health System Foundation, and has served over 20 years on the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo, including a term as Board Chair. John also served his community on the Boards of the Stratford Festival of Canada, Ontario Great Lakes Renewal Foundation, the Canadian Urban Institute and various United Ways across Ontario.

Director | Patrick Crowley

Patrick is a seasoned professional with a solid combination of strategic and financial leadership skills. He is a graduate of the Richard Ivey School of Business, a chartered accountant and a graduate of the Directors Education Program and holds the designation of ICD.D from the Institute of Corporate Directors. Patrick is currently Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of OMERS Administration Corporation and is a director of several not-for-profit corporations, private and public companies.

Director | Rob MacIsaac

Rob is the President and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences, one of Canada’s most comprehensive health care systems with seven unique hospitals serving 2.3 million residents. In his previous role as President of Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology, he established it as a leading institution for applied research, education and training, and one with high student satisfaction. Earlier in his career, Rob served as the first chair of Metrolinx, the regional transportation authority for the entire Greater Toronto Hamilton Area, and as a three term Mayor of Burlington, where he became well-known across the Greater Golden Horseshoe for his regional approach and progressive growth management ideas. Rob has degrees in Economics from the University of Waterloo and law from the University of Western Ontario.

Director | Joseph Rinaldo

Joe is the Former City Manager and General Manager of Finance and Corporate Services of the City of Hamilton.  Prior to his role with the City of Hamilton, Joe was the Commissioner of Corporate Services and Regional Treasurer with the Region of Halton.  He was the President of Hamilton Renewable Power Inc., a municipal corporation which operates a successful co-generation facility at the Hamilton Wastewater Treatment Plant.  Joe also served on numerous Professional Associations, including Chairman of the Municipal Finance Officers Association, Co-Chair of a Provincial/Municipal Task Force on Financial Benchmarking, member of the Public Sector Accounting and Audit Committee of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Board of Directors of the Society of Management Accountants of Ontario.  More recently, Joe served on several Advisory Committees on the Provincial/Municipal Fiscal and Service Delivery Review.  Joe has his CMA designation from the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario.

Director | Lou Serafini Jr.

Lou Serafini Jr. is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Fengate Capital Management Ltd. , an asset management firm in the alternatives sector, specializing in the management of customized infrastructure and real estate investment funds for institutional clients. The Firm manages over $1.7 billion in assets under management with expertise in infrastructure, commercial real estate and seniors housing. Mr. Serafini has served as a Director on numerous boards and presently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships and Horizon Utilities. Mr. Serafini holds an MBA from McMaster University and was instrumental in the establishment of the Fengate Community Foundation, a $1 million charitable fund supporting community initiatives benefiting impoverished youth and seniors. Under his leadership, Fengate Capital has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies since 2007.

 

Director | Christa Wessel

Christa is a management consultant at The Change Alliance, following a successful career as a business leader in market-leading public and private corporations across infrastructure, energy, oil & gas, healthcare, manufacturing, consumer products and agriculture-based industry sectors. She has held chief accountability for the legal, human resources, governance and compliance, communications and operations portfolios in companies such as McCain Foods Limited and Siemens Canada. As a senior partner with two major Canadian law firms, she has also provided strategic counsel to numerous corporations in the areas of international transactions, governance, mergers and acquisitions. Christa is a graduate of Glendon College, York University, earned her LLB at the University of Ottawa, and earned the Chartered Director designation from McMaster University.
