Sustainable Development

Horizon is the first electric utility company of any kind in Ontario to make a filing with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) - the de facto international standard for sustainability reporting - and also the first to seek and receive "external assurance" for a GRI filing.

For the 2008 reporting year, Horizon made a "self-declared" GRI filing at the "B" application level. This was done in combination with publishing its annual report as a "sustainability-based annual report", covering social, environmental and economic issues in equal measure. For its efforts, Horizon was named 'Company of the Year' by the Ontario Energy Association in September 2009.

Building on this achievement for the 2009 reporting year, Horizon raised the bar on its own performance. It is now the first electric company in Ontario to seek and receive "external assurance" of its GRI filing, which was performed by Ernst & Young. For 2009, following the GRI criteria, Horizon has the third party check and external assurance in hand to make the 2009 GRI Report filing at the 'B+' application level.
