Sustainable Development

Horizon is the first electric utility company of any kind in Ontario to make a filing with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) - the de facto international standard for sustainability reporting - and also the first to seek and receive "external assurance" for a GRI filing.

For the third consecutive year, Horizon Holdings Inc., the parent company of Horizon Utilities Corporation and Horizon Energy Solutions Inc., has published a Sustainability-Based Annual Report, focusing on the triple bottom-line of social, environmental and economic considerations and we are pleased to provide you with a copy.

This year's report highlights many of the significant initiatives we successfully completed in 2010 in support of our commitment to sustainability. Horizon files under the Global Reporting Initiative™ (GRI), the de facto international standard, and is the only LDC in Canada and the only Ontario utility to make such a filing.

Horizon has made progressive improvements in the rankings of its GRI filings, moving from "B" (2008), to "B+" (2009) and we're pleased to report that we achieved an "A+" ranking in 2010. Horizon has now received two annual external assurance statements on its GRI filings from Ernst & Young.

Dalian University of Technology visits Horizon Utilities

A group of executive MBAs from Dalian University of Technology visited Horizon Utilities' John Street head office in September 2011 and found their visit to be a valuable learning experience. The visit focused on how and why a leading-edge Western company practices sustainable development. The visit was facilitated by the University of Waterloo.
