A Kidz Like Me story

The event was the 43rd annual Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair (BASEF), which drew together the best science students from Hamilton elementary and secondary schools. It was the perfect spot to raise awareness about Horizon Utilities and its affiliates among talented young people who will become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow.

Horizon Utilities donated a $300 prize for the best project involving energy conservation or generation of electricity from alternative energy sources. It was won by an elementary school student , Jayne, for her project on sustainability for small communities. But the company also had a “pet project”.

Brittany and her project partner Amanda were curious about which light bulb was the most energy and cost-efficient. The two elementary school students borrowed equipment from Hamilton Hydro’s Meter Services and spent several hours with Meter Services staff, Al Vance and Peter Lilley working through their hypothesis.

The result was the Primary Fluid Systems Inc. Physical Science Award, which Brittany and Amanda won for their project entitled: Watt’s On Your Mind? The teens also won a Silver Merit award.
