Horizon Utilities' conservation and demand management programs saved a total of 59 million kilowatt hours
of energy over the last two years. That is enough to power 6,500 homes for one year and is equivalent to
diverting almost 17,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions or taking more than 8,000 cars off the road.
Conservation highlights in 2007 included:
Launched Generation Conservation - a 10-lesson curriculum Conservation of Energy
and Resources program for 7,500 Grade 5 students in 200 schools
Provided approximately 13,000 elementary school children the opportunity to view a lively electrical safety and energy conservation in-school presentations
In 2007, $710,058 paid out in Summer Savings rebates to 41,657 customers who reduced their energy consumption by 10%
More than 1,850 appliances were recycled under The Great Refrigerator Roundup
885 installations of peaksaver® programmable thermostats
50 applications received from commercial and industrial customers for rebates for installingenergy-saving lighting and other devices under the Energy Retrofit Incentive Program
Gave away 39,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs, 9,200 energy-efficient night lightsand 4,000 low-flow showerheads at community events
Distributed 524 energy conservation kits
Hamilton won the 2007 Blackout Challenge
Mohawk College received a $50,000 incentive toward an energy-efficient lighting upgrade for their Fennell Campus through Horizon Utilities' powerWISE for Business Incentive program
The City of Hamilton and the City of St. Catharines upgraded 460 intersectionsto LED traffic signals with a reimbursement from Horizon Utilities of $103,000
Horizon Utilities assisted in funding energy audits for arena facilities in St. Catharines and Hamilton as part of a provincial study
Horizon Utilities staff worked actively to build a Conservation Culture by attending 28 community events
