Residential/Business > Connecting Generation to Horizon's Distribution System

Technical Requirements

Customers interested in connecting a generation facility to Horizon Utilities' distribution system must ensure that the design and operation of the facility meets Horizon Utilities' technical requirements. With the exception of the sections listed below, Horizon Utilities has adopted Hydro One Networks' Distributed Generation Technical Interconnection Requirements. Click here to access these requirements on Hydro One Networks' website.

Section 1.6 - Capacity Limitations on Generator Interconnections Feeder Loading Limits

Click here for information on generation capacity limits on Horizon Utilities' distribution system.

Section 2.2.2.6 - Power Factor

The generation facility shall operate at a power factor between 0.9 lagging/overexcited (supplying reactive power) and 0.95 leading/underexcited (absorbing reactive power). However, the generation facility is not required to be capable of adjusting the power factor. If the generation facility disturbs the distribution system voltage levels at the Point of Common Coupling, then the generator may be required to operate the generation facility within a smaller power factor range or take other compensatory measures. Power factor correction may be required. For generators that are not IESO market participants, the reactive power compensation at the generating facility should be sufficient so as not to cause any material increase in the reactive power requirements at the transformer station due to the operation of the generation facility, at any distribution feeder load conditions.
